SOFTBALL SWEEPS DAY BEHIND STRONG PITCHING

Monmouth Hawks (7-6) – 2
Ohio Bobcats (6-12) – 1

USC Upstate Spartans (12-3) - 0
Monmouth Hawks (8-6) - 2

CONWAY, SC – Behind two dominant pitching performances and timely hitting, the Monmouth University softball team swept the day, including a 2-1 win over Ohio and a 2-0 triumph against USC Upstate.

Freshman pitcher Kylie Gletow (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout in the win over USC Upstate. She struck out five batters and forced 12 groundouts.

Junior pitcher Alyssa Irons (Rock Creek, OH/Jefferson Area/Hofstra) threw her usual complete game against Ohio, giving up just one run and four hits to earn her fifth win of the year.

Senior Kayla Rosado (Oradell, NJ/River Dell) continued her red hot start to the season, hitting the eventual game-winning two-RBI single in game one before hitting an RBI single in game two.

With the game scoreless in the top of the sixth against USC Upstate, sophomore Lindsey Baron (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) hit an RBI triple to give the Hawks the lead.

Monmouth improves to 8-6 on the season, and the team will wrap up the Coastal Carolina Invitational against UMES tomorrow morning.

NOTES AND QUOTES

"What an awesome day of softball. We played great against two tough opponents. Ohio is a very good hitting team, and I thought Alyssa and our defense did a good job of shutting down their stronger offensive innings. Our offense jumped on strikes. In game two, Kylie pitched great. She and [catcher] Erika [Coreth] did a great job of attacking hitters. Our offense had a lot of quality at bats, and our break came when Lindsey roped one to left field. I'm proud of our growth and excited to see what tomorrow brings." – Monmouth head coach Shannon Salsburg

-In game one, Monmouth opened the scoring in the top of the third. Junior Katie Harrington led off the inning with an infield single, and senior Sam Tomasetti followed with a single. The runners eventually moved up to second and third on a foul out and a steal.
-Rosado then hit a two-RBI single to center field, bringing home Harrington and Tomasetti to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
-Ohio hit a double to start off the bottom of the sixth, and eventually loaded the bases with one out. After forcing a foul out, Irons walked the next batter on a full count to make it 2-1.
-With the bases still loaded and two outs, Irons forced a groundout to end the inning.
-The Bobcats put a runner on second in the bottom of the seventh after an error and wild pitch, but Irons struck out the final batter for the win.

-In game two, a pitcher's duel saw three total hits through the first five innings.
-Monmouth crossed the plate first in the top of the sixth. Tomasetti reached on an error to lead off, and Baron brought her home with a triple to left field.
-A batter later, Rosado made it 2-0 with an RBI single.
-USC Upstate put a runner on second in the bottom of the sixth, but Gletow struck out a batter to end the inning.
-Gletow handled business in the bottom of the seventh, retiring three straight batters for the win.
