BASEBALL BATTLES, FALLS SHORT AT WOFFORD 3-2

SPARTANBURG, SC -  Monmouth University Baseball (3-4) fought back to tie the game but ultimately fell at SoCon preseason favorite Wofford College (7-1) in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday afternoon, 3-2. Three Hawks had multiple hits, while Trey Dombroski (Manasquan, NJ/Wall) struck out nine in six innings.

Wofford got on the board in the third, with Hudson Byorick doubling home a run before scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning. That would be the last run the Terriers would score until the ninth, as Monmouth got back into it. Back-to-back doubles off the bats of Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and Johnny Zega (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) got MU on the board, and Zega would come across on a throwing error in the sixth to knot things at two.

The Blue and White had opportunities, putting runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and eighth but could not convert. In the ninth, Brett Rodriguez doubled into the corner and Byorick singled into left, ultimately enabling Rodriguez to score the winning run.
