STATESBORO, GA – In two games Saturday, the Monmouth University softball team defeated Maryland, 2-1, before falling to host Georgia Southern.

Junior Morgan Maziarz (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford Area) hit a two-RBI single in the second inning of game one, which proved to be the game-winner.

Sophomore Alyssa Irons (Rock Creek, OH/Jefferson Area) tossed all seven innings in the win, giving up no earned runs and striking out five batters.

In game two, junior Erika Coreth (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) hit the go-ahead two-RBI single in the top of the fourth. The Eagles answered with 12 runs in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win.

Monmouth's record now stands at 4-5 on the season, and the team will wrap up Georgia Southern's Eagle Round Robin Tournament tomorrow against Evansville.

NOTES AND QUOTES

"I was pleased with how we came out in game one. Alyssa threw well, and our hitters found ways to push runs early. We kept pressure on their defense the entire game. In game two, Georgia Southern caught fire in the fourth. We need to continue to work to compete together when our opponent is pushing hard. Tomorrow is a new day. We'll be ready to finish strong."
 – Monmouth head coach Shannon Salsburg

-In game one, Maryland put runners on second and third in the bottom of the first, but Irons ended the threat with a strikeout.
-Monmouth got on the board first in the top of the second. Senior Amanda Hopeck hit an infield single with one out, and was sent to third with a double from senior Deangie Jimenez. Maziarz brought them both home with a single to right field, making it 2-0.
-Baron led off the third with a double to left center, but the next three batters were retired.
-Maryland's leadoff batter reached on an error in the bottom of the third, and advanced to third with a steal and wild pitch. The Terrapins cut the deficit to 2-1 with an RBI groundout.
-Maryland put runners on second and third in the fifth inning, but Irons forced a groundout.
-With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Terrapins hit two singles, but Irons once again shut the door with a fly out to seal the win.

-In game two, Georgia Southern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI single. Gletow minimized the damage, however, getting out of a bases loaded jam.
-Rosado smacked a double to the left center wall to open the fourth, and Wozniak followed with a walk. After junior Katie Harrington came in to pinch run, the duo moved up a base from a wild pitch.
-Coreth gave Monmouth a 2-1 lead with a two-RBI single through the left side.
-Georgia Southern broke it open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring 12 runs to take a 13-2 lead.
-The Hawks were set down in order in the top of the fifth, ending the game.
