HAMDEN, CT – Deion Hammond (Mitchellville, MD/Riverdale Baptist School) became the 43
rd player in program history and the eighth fastest to reach 1,000 career points, doing so on a second half three pointer as Monmouth University Men's Basketball (8-7, 2-2 MAAC) fell at Quinnipiac University (9-5, 4-0 MAAC) Sunday 84-70.
QU widened the second half lead by as much as 25, but the Hawks came back to get it within 15 on a
George Papas (Jersey City, NJ/Union Catholic) three pointer. The closest MU got in the period was 14 on
Melik Martin's (York, PA/York Catholic) late basket, as the Bobcats kept MU as an arms length to secure the win.
After the Hawks got out to a 9-2 start on a pair of
Mustapha Traore (Philadelphia, PA/The Phelps School) buckets, Quinnipiac answered with three consecutive triples from Tyrese Williams to ultimately go up 14-9. MU got within three, but QU used a 13-0 run to pull away, with three triples in the stretch to take a 29-13 advantage. MU got it within 13 but a late Williams layup made it 41-25 at the break.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"Very frustrating day. Let's give all the credit to Quinnipiac, they're a very good team and extremely well coached and they did what they're supposed to do today by winning on their home court. I let my frustration get the best of me today and I usually don't do that and I feel like I let the guys down, but we'll get back and we'll be better." – Head Coach
