VANCOUVER - Former Monmouth University men's lacrosse midfielder
Gordon Phillips '19 was chosen by the Vancouver Warriors in the sixth round of the 2019 National Lacrosse League Draft.
Phillips, who was the 80th overall selection, is the first Monmouth player to be picked in the National Lacrosse League Draft. The National Lacrosse League is a men's professional box lacrosse league with 13 teams across North America, including five in Canada.
"It means a lot to me to be drafted," Phillips said of his selection. "It was always a dream of mine to play in the NLL and being able to represent my home team makes it that much better. I grew up watching the Vancouver Ravens and idolized them, so I am extremely grateful to be in this position with the Vancouver Warriors."
A 2019 graduate, Phillips was a do-it-all midfielder during his four years at Monmouth. He began his career by being named to the 2016 MAAC All-Rookie Team and was a Second Team All-MAAC selection as a senior. Phillips played in 17 games during Monmouth's 2017 MAAC Regular Season and Tournament Championship season and helped the Hawks earn their first NCAA Tournament berth.
A team captain as a senior, Phillips scored seven goals and had 20 assists for 27 career points, including three man-up goals. He graduated ranked seventh in Monmouth history with 20 career assists, finished third in Monmouth history in ground balls and caused turnovers with 103 and 42, respectively.
"Gordie is a competitor who loves to play the game, so our staff couldn't be more proud and happy for him to be able to continue his lacrosse career.," head coach
Brian Fisher said. "We know that he will be a great representative for Monmouth in the professional ranks and we wish him luck as he gets started with the Vancouver Warriors."
Phillips joins
Bryce Wasserman '18 (Major League Lacrosse) as Monmouth players who have been drafted by professional lacrosse leagues.
