WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University women's soccer team opened its 2019 season with a 1-0 setback to visiting Hofstra on Friday night at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.
The game featured a pair of NCAA Tournament teams from 2018 and Hofstra dictated the action for a majority of the opening 45 minutes. The decisive goal came midway through the opening half when Lucy Shepherd played a square ball inside the Monmouth penalty area and Lucy Porter finished the opportunity.
Monmouth had the better of the chances in the second half as
Lexie Palladino,
Maddison Perna and
Jess Johnson each had terrific scoring openings. Perna had a header cleared off the line into the crossbar in the 58
th minute moments after the Hofstra keeper made an outstanding save on Johnson's free kick.
