SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has announced that Marques Alston and Jewonda Bright Jenkins will be Monmouth University's 2019 honorees for the league's Honor Roll. The pair of 1,000 point scorers for the Hawks become the seventh group to earn the accolade, dating back to Monmouth's first season in the league in 2013.
A two-time conference champion, Marques Alston was a part of a great run of Monmouth Basketball from 2003-2007, which included two NCAA berths and a win over Hampton in the 2006 NCAA Opening Round. For his efforts in the 2006 NEC Championships, Alston was named the tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament Team after picking up All-Conference Second Team honors that season.
Alston ranks in the top-20 all-time in scoring, netting over 1,100 career points, and finished his career in the top 10 in career field goals made with 435. Alston is currently eighth and finished his career fifth in career rebounding with 530, while playing in 126 games in his four-year career, which was the most in school history at the conclusion of his four seasons.Â
From 2001 to 2004, Jewonda Bright Jenkins starred for the Monmouth University women's basketball team. Bright brought tremendous energy and athleticism to the Hawks, ending her playing career as an exceptional post player. During her senior year, she was named to the All-NEC Second Team and Northeast Conference All-Tournament team, eventually finishing her tenure averaging 13.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per outing.
Bright currently ranks 10th on the all-time scoring list with 1,121 points, which she accumulated in only three seasons for the Hawks. She also ranks 15th on the all-time rebounding list with 569 boards for her career. Bright scored a career-high 36 points against Sacred Heart in 2004, which are the fifth-most points in a single game in program history.
With 440 field goals made on 788 attempts, she has the highest field goal percentage in Monmouth history (55.8%). She also ranks ninth on the career blocks list with 88.
Honorees will be enshrined in "The MAAC Experience" exhibit at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday, September 14. Each member institution of the MAAC honors one male and one female from its basketball "family" as part of the 2019 induction class. A dinner event takes place Saturday, September 14 at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Court of Dreams to recognize the Honor Roll inductees.
