SOFTBALL DEFEATS GEORGE MASON, 4-2

Monmouth Hawks (6-6) - 4
George Mason Patriots (4-8) – 2

FAIRFAX, VA – After the Patriots tied the game in the fourth, juniors Sam Tomasetti and Amber Wozniak each hit RBI singles in the fifth to give the Monmouth University softball team a win over George Mason on Saturday, 4-2. Junior Kayla Rosado registered the other RBI for the Hawks, hitting an RBI double to score freshman Lindsey Baron in the first. Baron herself picked up a double, a walk, and two runs in the win. Sophomore Lilly Robles tossed 3.2 innings and gave up just one earned run, and sophomore Alyssa Irons came in relief for 3.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Monmouth improves to 6-6 on the season, and will face Marshall and Lafayette tomorrow.

NOTES AND QUOTES

"Our schedule has changed numerous times, and I think our team has done a great job of being flexible. Once it was time to play, they showed up. Both Lilly and Alyssa were fantastic in the circle. Lilly did a good job of mixing it up and trusting the defense to make plays. Alyssa came in and really just closed it out for us. Offensively, I couldn't have been more proud of our team. It was the first time this year that every time the opponent scored, we answered in the next inning. Our hitters went in with a plan, but also got quality at bats. We didn't try to do too much, and it showed." – Monmouth head coach Shannon Salsburg

-Baron walked to lead off the game, and advanced to second on a groundout. Rosado's double down the left field line put Monmouth on the board first.
-George Mason answered in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, but Robles minimized the damage, striking out a batter with the bases loaded.
-In the top of the third, Tomasetti singled with one out. Rosado singled to right field the next at bat, and Tomasetti advanced to third on an error. After senior Jasmine Higa came in to pinch run for Rosado and threatened to steal, Tomasetti scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
-The Patriots tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single with two outs.
-In the top of the fifth, Baron led off with a double to left center. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Tomasetti brought her home with a single through the left side. Rosado grounded out to bring Tomasetti to second, and Wozniak made it 4-2 with a single down the right field line.
-Irons shut down George Mason in the final three innings, not allowing a runner to get further than second base.
