SOFTBALL FALLS TO MARSHALL IN FIVE INNINGS, 1-0

(5 inn.)
Marshall Thundering Herd (15-5) – 1
Monmouth Hawks (5-6) - 0

FAIRFAX, VA – Before the game was called due to snow after five innings, Marshall hit an RBI groundout in the first inning for the only run scored to defeat the Monmouth University softball team on Friday, 1-0. Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Irons gave up just three hits and one unearned run in five innings, but the only Hawks hit came in the first inning, a double from freshman Lindsey Baron. Monmouth drops to 5-6 on the season, and will face George Mason and Lafayette tomorrow.

NOTES AND QUOTES

"Our team handled the elements and Alyssa pitched well, but we just simply could not get a run. I'm hopeful the weather will move through and we can get back out there tomorrow." – Monmouth head coach Shannon Salsburg

-With one out in the top of the first, Marshall hit a double down the left field line. After the runner advanced to third on a passed ball, the Herd scored the only run of the game with an RBI groundout.
-Monmouth answered with Baron's double in the bottom half of the inning, but the Hawks struck out once and flied out twice to end the inning.
-Junior Sam Tomasetti walked for the second time in the bottom of the fourth. After two groundouts advanced her to third, Monmouth struck out.
