GREENVILLE, NC – Monmouth University Baseball (0-5) dropped a close first game to No. 9 East Carolina (5-1) by a 3-1 count before dropping the nightcap 10-0 in Greenville on Saturday. MU got solid pitching in the first game from several different players, including starter
Dan Klepchick (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks South).
Klepchick was effective for MU in the opener, allowing just two runs in five innings. He pitched through fifth-inning trouble, with ECU loading the bases before he escaped. The Pirates got on the board with single runs in each of the first two innings, getting a Thomas Francisco RBI single and Alec Burleson sac fly to go up 2-0. The Hawks sliced it in half in the third when
Danny Long (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) doubled and went to third on a ground out before
Kyle Norman (Ellicott City, MD/Good Counsel/Buffalo) scored him with a ground out. Jake Washer later added an insurance run for the home team with a solo homer, making it 3-1, the eventual final.
After two and a half scoreless innings in Game Two, ECU broke through with five doubles in the third inning to break things open with a four-run frame. After going up 4-0, they added another pair in the fourth on a double play and an Alec Burleson RBI base hit to extend the lead to 6-0. Seth Caddell made it 7-0 with a one out, solo home run in the fifth, and ECU added three more in their final two at bats to close the 10-0 win in the nightcap.
