FIELD HOCKEY FALLS IN SHOOTOUT AT MICHIGAN STATE, 2-1

EAST LANSING, MI – For the second time in program history, the Monmouth University field hockey team played full time and entered a shootout, but ultimately fell to Michigan State in the fifth round, Friday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.

In the shootout, Ireen Frenken converted in the first round and was matched by MSU's Kelsey Kenner.  Freshman Annick van Lange's attempt was spoiled by the Spartan's goalkeeper, Jade Arundell and the home team took a 1-0 lead on Isa van der Weij made attempt.  Georgia Garden Bachop found the back of the cage in the third round and goalkeeper Gabi Millan made a stop to even the score at 2-2.  Josephine van der Hoop drove right to start the fourth round and rang her shot off the post, while Aisha Osinga attempt was successful to allow the Spartans to regain the lead.  Kelly Hanna was taken out by Arundell and the Hawks were awarded a penalty stroke, which Frenken stepped up and converted.  Maddie McDonough scored in the home half of the fifth round to clinch the game for MSU.

After a scoreless 35 minutes, the Hawks opened the scoring in the 39th minute on Garden Bachop's backhanded shot off a feed from van Lange, but McDonough scored with three minutes left in regulation to force the extra periods.

NOTES & QUOTES
"It is always great to be able to compete against a Big Ten opponent and get tested early in the season.  It was a hard way to lose in a shootout but I think for the majority of the game we played really well.  We made some young mistakes that proved to cost us in the end."  – Head Coach Carli Figlio

- The Hawks have faced a Big Ten opponent in each of the last seven seasons.
– It marks MU's third meeting with Michigan State and first trip to East Lansing since 2013.  It is the second time the two sides played overtime.
- Georgia Garden Bachop and Stefanie Bigler both made their season debuts.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
- Monmouth outshot Michigan State, 13-11, including 6-2 in the 20 extra minutes.
- The Spartans earned 10 attacking corners, compared to just six for the Blue and White.
- van der Hoop led the Hawks with four shot attempts, while Garden Bachop had three attempts, all on cage.
- Millan finished with three saves on the afternoon.
