MEN’S TENNIS WINS THIRD STRAIGHT MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP

Box Score WEST WINDSOR, NJ – The Monmouth University men's tennis team won its third consecutive MAAC Championship on Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 3 Marist by a score of 4-0. The Hawks advance to their third straight NCAA Tournament, and will find out their opponent during the NCAA Selection Show on Tuesday at 5:30 PM. Monmouth secured the doubles point with wins at No. 2 (senior Ale Gomez Estrada and junior Alberto Giuffrida) and No. 3 (sophomore Sergio Martinez and junior Srdjan Jakovljevic). Jakovljevic was the first to finish in singles play, earning the 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2. Giuffrida's opponent retired at No. 6 singles, so the Hawks needed just one more singles win to clinch the title. Gomez Estrada and MAAC player of the Year Nicola Pipoli were both one game away, and Gomez Estrada eventually took the win at No. 3 singles to clinch the championship, 6-2, 6-3. He was later named MAAC Most Outstanding Player. After a perfect 7-0 conference record during the regular season, the Hawks defeated Fairfield 4-0 in the semifinals and Marist 4-0 in the championship. Monmouth has won 11 straight matches heading into the NCAA Tournament.
