MONMOUTH TOPS MARIST TO CLINCH POSTSEASON BERTH

FINAL SCORE
Monmouth 9 (6-6, 3-1 MAAC)
Marist 7 (3-10, 2-3 MAAC)

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth University men's lacrosse team outscored Marist 4-1 in the second half to defeat the Red Foxes, 9-7, on Saturday afternoon at Kessler Stadium.

By virtue of the win, Monmouth clinched a berth in the 2018 MAAC Tournament, which will be held at Kessler Stadium on May 3-5.

Marist took a 6-5 lead with less than five minutes to play in the first half and held that advantage until late in the third quarter. Casey Kimmel's goal with 2:38 on the third quarter clock ended a 17-minute scoreless drought and ignited a three-goal Monmouth run that gave the Hawks the lead for good.

Griffin Figel scored a little more than a minute after Kimmel and then completed his hat trick midway through the fourth quarter to make it 8-6. Marist pulled back within one two minutes later, but the Hawks held on and added an empty net goal to run the final score to 9-7.

NOTES & QUOTES
"That was a really good lacrosse game. Gannon Morrison is a very good player for them and we needed to make some adjustments at halftime to defend him. We knew it was going to be a tough game today, I think every time we play Marist it is a tough game. To earn the win in the second half and buckle down the way we did, I'm really proud of our guys."
