BIG SEVENTH INNING PROPELS MONMOUTH TO SERIES WIN

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Monmouth scored seven runs in the seventh inning to win a MAAC series against Canisius on Saturday, winning the second game of the doubleheader 9-3. MU wins its first league series of the year, getting three hits from Zach Schild (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) and three RBI's from John LaRocca (Plainview, NY/St. Dominic) in the final game. Canisius took the opener of the twinbill by a 7-5 score.

Canisius jumped to a 5-0 lead in the opener, as Ryan Stekl continued his big series with a two-run single in the first and an RBI on a fielder's choice in the third. Gage Lanning followed that up with a two-RBI double to the gap in right center to pit Canisius to a big early lead. The Hawks responded with three in the bottom half, however, getting on the board when JD Andreesen (Depew, NY/Lancaster/Campbell) pushed an infield single to the right side. Pete Papcun (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) drove a two-run single to make it 5-3 Griffs.

The teams traded runs again in the fourth, with Christ Conley joining Stekl in driving in runs with base hits before Kyle Norman (Ellicott City, MD/Good Counsel/Buffalo) doubled in the bottom half, making it 7-5. MU was unable to get a baserunner against Will Frank, who picked up the save.

In the second game, MU took a 2-0 lead thanks to LaRocca's single back through the box in the second and Clay Koniencki's (Schwenksville, PA/Malvern Prep) run-scoring knock past shortstop in the fourth. Liam Wilson got it back with one swing for Canisius, hitting a two-run home run over the left field wall in the sixth to tie things at two. Lanning later doubled in a run in the inning to give the Griffs the lead.

A huge seventh inning propelled the Hawks to the win, with MU loading the bases ahead of a pitching change. Papcun worked out a five-pitch walk to force in the tying run, before Johnny Zega (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) pinch hit and walked on four pitches to make it 4-3 Hawks. Schild laced a grounder towards first that was mishandled, allowing two more runs to come across, before Koniencki dropped a two-run double inside the left field line to break the game open and make it 8-3 Monmouth. LaRocca added an RBI double to close out the inning, and Austin Counsellor (Salem, NJ/Woodstown/Gloucester CC) fired three shutout frames to lock down his second win.

NOTES AND QUOTES
"Plate discipline was huge. We scored two big runs by walking against a real good pitcher with two guys that had previously been chasing pitches. We strung together seven good at-bats in a row and had that never-say-die attitude." – Dean Ehehalt

"Counsellor came in and filled up the zone, and he had enough movement on his pitches. There's some good hitters in that lineup and he kept them just a little bit off balance and threw some ground balls. Our pitchers were outstanding today." – Ehehalt
