Amber Wozniak's career day, the Monmouth University softball team split the 2018 season openers, falling to Massachusetts, 11-3, before defeating Georgia Southern, 9-4. During the two games, Wozniak went 3-for-5 with two home runs, six RBI, two runs, and a double. Senior
Katie Baron went 4-for-6 with a home run, two RBI, and two runs on the day. The Hawks open the season with a 1-1 record, and will take on Abilene Christian and Eastern Michigan tomorrow.
NOTES AND QUOTES
"It was a tale of two games today. In game one, we didn't make the necessary adjustments. Game two was very different. We played hard, pitched well, and [freshman P] Lily [Robles] gave us some quality innings. Our hitters absolutely crushed the ball in game two, which we hope to build on." –

-Each team scored a run in the first inning of the first contest, including Rosado's RBI single to drive
Chloe Howerth.
-After Wozniak belted a solo home run to left field, UMass scored seven runs in the second inning to take an 8-2 lead.
-The Hawks scored for the third straight inning with Howerth crossing home on a wild pitch to make it 8-3. UMass scored another two runs in the bottom of the third, however, taking a 10-3 advantage.
-In the bottom of the fifth, the Minutewomen ended the game with an RBI single.
-In game two against Georgia Southern, the Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Monmouth used a double steal to plate the first run, as Howerth gave the Hawks the 1-0 lead.
-After homering in game one, Wozniak belted a three-RBI double in the top of the first, scoring
Sam Tomasetti, Alex Hozman, and
Katie Baron.
-The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the third with four runs, including a two-RBI double.
-Wozniak continued her career day with a two-run blast in the fourth, and Monmouth took the 8-4 lead with RBI from Baron and Holzman.
-In the bottom of the sixth, Georgia Southern loaded the bases with no outs.
Amanda Riley got out of the jam, however, striking out a batter and forcing a double play.
-Baron homered in the top of the 7
th for an insurance run, and the Hawks eventually took the 9-4 win.
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Freshman
Lilly Robles won the first game of her career in game two.
-Riley earned the game two save, and has a Monmouth program-record eight for her career.
-Sophomore
Sam Tomasetti went 2-for-3 with two runs and a double on the day.
-Howerth racked up three hits and four runs in the span of two games.
UP NEXT
Monmouth will play two more games tomorrow, with the first coming against Abilene Christian at 4:00 PM. The Hawks will then face host Eastern Michigan at 6:30 PM.
