NEWARK, NJ – The Monmouth University men's tennis team wrapped up competition at the NJIT Invitational this weekend, highlighted by multiple wins in both singles and doubles play.
On Saturday,
Max Benaim and
Ale Gomez Estrada earned the 6-4 win over Bucknell at first doubles, while
Sergio Martinez and
Will Cooke Wharton won at second doubles over FDU, 7-5.
At No. 2 singles, Gomez Estrada took the 6-2, 7-5 win over FDU's Youseff Sader. Martinez picked up another win at No. 4 singles against Bucknell, 6-1, 6-1, while Cooke Wharton handled FDU at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
In round two of singles play on Saturday, Benaim earned the 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over FDU. Martinez continued his strong day with a 6-4, 6-4 over FDU win at No. 4 singles. Cooke Wharton earned his second No. 5 singles win of the day, this time over NJIT by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
On Sunday, Benaim and Estrada won once again at No. 1 doubles, defeating FDU 6-2. In the third round of No. 1 doubles, Benaim and Estrada won their third straight over NJIT, 6-1.
Freshman
Ole Gettler teamed up with a member of Bucknell to win at No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (4).
In the third round of singles, Benaim took home the 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 over NJIT, while Cooke Wharton led at No. 5 against Bucknell, 6-1, 3-1, retired.
The Hawks return to action for their first home match of the spring on Friday. Monmouth will host DePaul at the New Shrewsbury Racket Club beginning at 7:30 PM.
