WOMEN’S BASKETBALL DEFEATED BY ALBANY, 68-44

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Using a 29-0 run from the end of the first quarter to the midway point of the second quarter, Albany defeated the Monmouth University women's basketball team on Thursday night, 68-44. Sophomore Kayla Shaw led the Hawks with 16 points and also added a career-high four steals. Junior center Erica Balman notched a career-high 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss. Monmouth registered a season-high 31 turnovers, and the Great Danes capitalized with 32 points off turnovers. The Hawks fall to 1-2 on the season, and will look to even their record in their first road game of the season at Clemson on Sunday.
 
NOTES AND QUOTES

-With 4:23 left in the first quarter, Monmouth led by four. However, Albany rattled off a 29-0 run from the end of the first quarter to the middle of the second quarter, and took a 26-point lead with 4:22 left in the first half.
-The teams went into the locker room with Albany up 42-23.
-Monmouth outscored the Great Danes 12-6 in the third quarter, and went into the final frame down 48-35.
-Albany sealed the win in the fourth quarter, as they outscored the Hawks 20-9. Monmouth fell to 1-2 on the season after the 68-44 loss.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Sophomore Alexa Middleton made her first career start.
-Shaw went into double-figures for the third straight game to open the season, and 22nd time of her career. Through the first three games of the season, she is shooting 56.3% from the field and 52.6% from three.
-Balman put up six points and three rebounds in the first quarter.
-Rosa Graham registered four steals, which was just one shy of her career-high.
-The Hawks' 31 turnovers was their highest total of the season.
-Albany went 9-10 from the free throw line, while Monmouth made just 2-7.
-Monmouth won the rebound battle 40-38.

UP NEXT
The Hawks will travel to Clemson this Sunday for a 1:00 PM matchup. In the first-ever meeting between the teams last season, the Tigers earned the 60-47 win in West Long Branch. Guard Alaina Jarnot totaled eight points and three assists in the loss.
