HAWKS FALL IN FINAL SECONDS AT CLEMSON, 57-54

CLEMSON, SC – Scoring eight straight points in the final 21.8 seconds, Clemson edged the Monmouth University women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon, 57-54. Sophomore forward Taylor Nason grabbed her ninth rebound of the game, got fouled, and hit both free throws to put the Hawks up 54-49 with 24.1 seconds remaining, but the Tigers forced three Monmouth turnovers and scored three straight layups to take the lead. Sophomore guard Kayla Shaw poured in 19 points in the loss, and was 8-11 from the floor with three triples. Senior guard Rhaiah Spooner-Knight added 13 points and five rebounds, scoring in double-figures for the third time in four games. The Hawks fall to 1-3 on the season, and look to snap a three-game losing skid at Jacksonville on Friday.
 
NOTES AND QUOTES

-The Hawks ran out to a 9-4 lead in the first 2:57 of the game, forcing Clemson to take its first timeout. Shaw had seven of those nine points, while Jarnot registered two assists in that span.
-In last season's matchup against Clemson, the Hawks fell behind 23-5 in the first quarter and outscored Clemson in the second, third, and fourth quarters. In today's matchup, the Hawks led 18-13 after the first quarter.
-Clemson started to answer in the second quarter, and took its first lead with 4:19 to play. Spooner-Knight hit two straight jumpers and registered a steal to put Monmouth back on top 28-27 at halftime.
-Monmouth opened up the third quarter on a 9-2 run, and took an eight-point lead with 3:57 to play in the frame at 37-29.
-Monmouth outscored the Tigers 13-7 in the third quarter, and went into the final frame up 41-37.
-Another Shaw triple gave Monmouth its largest lead of 10 with 8:22 left in the fourth.
-Clemson battled back and had the ball down just three points with 24 seconds left. Nason grabbed a huge rebound, got fouled, and hit both free throws to put the Hawks up 54-49 with 24.1 seconds remaining.
-The Tigers scored scored six straight points in the next 16 seconds to take the 55-54 lead. After Monmouth turned it over, Clemson went to the line with 2.8 seconds remaining, and hit both.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Monmouth led for 34:12 of the game; Clemson led for 3:39.
-Monmouth took the 43-29 rebounding advantage.
-The Hawks had 14 assists to the Tigers' three.
-The Hawks held Clemson without a three-point field goal until 1:45 left in the game.
-Sophomore Adriana Zelaya scored her first points of the season in the first quarter. Zelaya also played a career-high 22 minutes.
-Monmouth held the Tigers to just seven points in the third quarter, but Clemson outscored the Hawks 23-13 in the fourth.
-The Hawks are now 0-14 all-time against ACC opponents.
 
UP NEXT
Monmouth will travel to Jacksonville, FL at the end of the week. The Hawks will take on Jacksonville on Friday before facing North Florida on Saturday.
