PRINCETON, NJ – The Monmouth University men's tennis team wrapped up competition at Princeton's Farnsworth Invitational this weekend. Junior
Alberto Giuffrida won three straight matches in the "A Singles" bracket before falling in the final four to Virginia's Kyrylo Tsygura. Giuffrida teamed up with sophomore
Max Benaim in "B Doubles", earning the 8-6 win over Bryant. Sophomore
Sergio Martinez earned the opening round win of "B Singles" against FDU's Youssef Sader, 7-5, 6-0. In the "C Doubles" portion, Martinez and freshman
Will Wharton won two matches against Hofstra and NJIT to advance to the final four before falling to Drexel. Wharton later won the "D Singles" consolation bracket after winning three straight matches.
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-Giuffrida defeated Marist's Javier Restrepo in the first match, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 10-6, and took down Luka Sucevic of St. John's to advance to the last four, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.
-Giuffrida and Benaim fell to NJIT in the second round of "B Doubles", 8-5.
-After Martinez earned the opening round win in "B Singles", he fell to Princeton's Diego Vives, 6-2, 6-0.
-In "C Doubles", Martinez and Wharton defeated Hofstra by a score of 8-4, then took down NJIT by a 8-3 tally.
-Benaim earned another win at "C Singles", taking down Middlebury 6-1, 6-4. He then lost to Columbia, 6-2, 6-2.
-Wharton fell in "D Singles" to Princeton, 6-4, 6-4, but went on to win three straight matches over Middlebury (6-4, 6-4), NJIT (6-1, 7-5), and FDU (6-3, 4-6, 10-2) to win the consolation bracket.
