WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – A two-goal performance by
Madie Gibson helped the Monmouth University women's soccer team remain on top of the MAAC standings after a 2-1 victory over Manhattan on Senior Night at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.
For the sixth consecutive match, Monmouth scored first as Gibson found the back of the net on a run down the left sideline. The redshirt sophomore forward sent a left-footed ball toward the far post that beat Manhattan goalie Kelly DiGregorio and gave Monmouth the lead less than five minutes after the opening whistle.
The Jaspers answered a little more than 10 minutes later with a goal by Emma Saul that ended Monmouth's streak of holding its opponent scoreless for 605:55.
The game remained tied until late in the first half when Monmouth drew a free kick just outside the Manhattan penalty area. Gibson stepped up and used her lethal left foot to fire a strike into the upper corner that DiGregorio had no chance to stop.
The 2-1 lead held until the final whistle and Monmouth remained unbeaten at home in 2017.
