NEW HAVEN, CT – The Monmouth University men's tennis team completed play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional this weekend, racking up multiple wins throughout the tournament. Junior
Nicola Pipoli made it to the third round of the main draw singles, while senior
Ale Gomez Estrada and junior
Alberto Giuffrida earned first round wins in the main draw singles. Sophomore
Max Benaim entered the main draw after winning two qualifying singles matches against Fairfield and St. John's. The ITA Regionals brought the end of the fall season for the Hawks, who will look for their third consecutive MAAC Championship in the spring.
NUMBERS CRUNCH
-After a bye in the first round of the main draw singles, Pipoli came from behind to earn the 0-6, 7-6, 7-5 win over Sucevic of St John's. Pipoli then fell to Cornell's McAllister by a score of 5-7, 6-1, 3-6 in the third round.
-Giuffrida defeated Boston's Marc Sable in the first round of main draw singles, 6-4, 7-6.
-Benaim was defeated in the main draw singles first round by Brown's Ching Lam, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6.
-Senior
Ale Gomez Estrada won his first round main draw singles match against Binghamton by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
-Freshman
Will Cooke Wharton was defeated in his first round qualifying singles match, 6-7, 6-4, 3-6.
-Sophomore
Sergio Martinez won his first round qualifying singles match against Lehigh's Jan Petersen, 6-1, 6-0. Martinez then lost to Dartmouth, 3-6, 2-6.
-In the doubles portion, Pipoli and Gomez Estrada were edged by Princeton, 7-8.
-Giuffrida and Benaim also fell in the doubles portion (5-8 to Brown).
-In the singles consolation bracket, Martinez took down Wagner by a tally of 6-3, 7-5. Benaim was defeated by Penn (3-6, 6-7), and Cooke Wharton fell to Bryant (5-7, 4-6).

The Hawks will travel to Old Dominion on January 13, 2018 to open the spring season.
