ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Monmouth University men's tennis team opened the 2016-17 season at the Joe Hunt Invitational this weekend. Nicola Pipoli (Polignano a Mare, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Sante Simone), Christian Vieira (Houston, TX/Memorial) and Alberto Giuffrida (Catania, Italy/Lincoln) earned third-place finishes in their respective singles flights, while Pipoli and Przemyslaw Filipek (Bedzin, Poland/Second Lo [Silesia]) took third place at the top doubles flight.

“It was great to see the guys compete and get our feet wet with the first competition of the fall season,” said Monmouth Head Coach Alex Kasarov. “We have a good group of talented guys and we as coaches are looking forward to working with them and getting better heading into our next fall invite at Princeton, October 7-9.”

Pipoli earned wins over Temple's Uladzimir Dorash, Bucknell's Daniel Wright and George Washington's Chris Fletcher to take third place at the top singles flight. Vieira defeated Guillermo Garcia of St. Bonaventure, Matt Miles of Mary Washington and Canyon Teague of Richmond to take third place in the C singles flight, while Giuffrida beat Lukas Linden Malmberg of St. Bonaventure, Dominick Perez of Delaware and Andrey Majkic of Navy to earn third place in the D flight.

Filipek and Pipoli marched to third place in the A doubles flight with wins over duos from Mary Washington, George Washington and George Mason.

The Hawks return to action Oct. 7-9, when they take part in the Farnsworth Invitational at Princeton.
