FINAL SCORE
Monmouth 2 (10-4-1, 7-0-0 MAAC)
Quinnipiac 1 (9-5-1, 5-3-0 MAAC)
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – Rachelle Ross (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape) scored twice after halftime, including the overtime game-winner, to send the Monmouth University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Quinnipiac on Senior Night at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.
Monmouth weathered an early offensive attack by Quinnipiac in a scoreless first half that saw both teams hit the post, before conceding the game's first goal in the 55th minute. After going down 1-0, Monmouth began to shift the momentum in its favor and broke through with a tying goal with 13 minutes remaining in regulation.
Each team had terrific opportunities to win the game in overtime with
Julie Spracklin (Easthampton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) and Ross each being denied from in close by a Quinnipiac defender on the goal line. The Bobcats went down the other end, but Monmouth goalkeeper
Amanda Knaub (Enola, PA / Trinty) kept the game tied with a save prior to a scramble in front that was eventually cleared away from danger prior to Ross' game-winner.
NOTES & QUOTES
"Senior night is an emotional night as the team wants to do well to send the seniors off with a victory. We started off very shaky and were fortunate to not give up an early goal. We weathered the storm and in the second half possessed the ball much better. The depth in our attack showed again with two terrific goals by Rachelle."
