ITHACA, NY – The Monmouth University field hockey team fell to Cornell, 5-0, Sunday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field. With the defeat, the Hawks slip to 2-4 on the year, while the Big Red improves to 2-2.
Cornell built a three-goal lead before the break on a goal by Katy Weeks and a pair by Kyrsten Mayers. The Big Red continued their offensive attack in the second half as Kate Fitzpatrick and Marisa Siergiej each found the back of the cage.
Sophomore Julie Laszlo (Rotterdam, Netherlands/Rotterdams Montessori Lyceum) connected on three shots, while classmate Meg Donahue (Wyomissing, PA/Berks Catholic) registered a pair of shots and senior Cori Allen (Gibbsboro, NJ/Eastern Regional [Iowa]) along with junior Casey Hanna, freshmen Teresa Warner (Lower Hutt, New Zealand/Sacred Heart), Elyssa Okken (Hellertown, PA/Saucon Valley) and Gab Girardi (Roseland, NJ/West Essex) each posted one attempt, but nothing got past Kelly Johnson, who had five saves for the shutout victory.
Christen Piersanti (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) made seven saves for the Blue and White and Laszlo helped with her second defensive save of the season.
For the game, Cornell outshot the Hawks 18-10, and held a 10-6 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Monmouth returns home on Friday, September 18th, when they play host to Temple. Opening whistle from So Sweet A Cat Field is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN3.\
