ORLANDO, Fla. – Paced by freshman Sarah Kokotajlo (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) and senior Jessica Kavanagh (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro), the Monmouth University women's golf team sits in sixth place after the first round of the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships, held at Disney's par-72 Magnolia Golf Course.
As a team, the Blue and White shot 322 on the afternoon, two strokes off its season low set at the Lehigh Invitational during fall campaign. University at Albany holds a 13 stroke lead on Dayton and Fairfield, carding 303, while Quinnipiac and Siena sit a combined three shots behind the Flyers and Stags with 317 and 319, respectively. The Great Danes'Paige Fujihara fired a two-over par 74 to lead the field individually.
One off her season-low mark of 76, Kokotajlo posted 11 even holes while sinking a birdie on the par-three 12th to enter the second day with sole possession of ninth, five over. Kavanagh finished second for MU, recording 79 and a team-best two birdies, to claim a piece of 15th overall, while Rebecca Gaona (Howell, N.J./Howell) finished a pair of strokes behind with 81. Freshman Faith Garcia (Stamford, Conn./Staples) notched 85 in her MAAC Championship debut, four strokes in front of classmate Kaitlin Clancy (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), who closed out the MU card.
