PHILADELPHIA, Pa.— The Monmouth University men's tennis team recorded a solid win over Drexel, 4-0, Thursday afternoon in a non-conference match in the Legacy Center. The Hawks' victory improves their record to 4-3, while the Dragons fall to 8-4 with their first home loss of the season.
“The guys did a great job with focus and energy from the beginning and played relaxed and composed,” stated Head Coach Cory Hubbard. “We were able to get five, first sets and just kept the momentum without letting them back in.”
Victor Pugliese (Boulogne, France/CNED [San Diego]) had a quick win over Badr Ouabdelmoumen 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 to get the Hawks on the board before Vidit Vaghela (Ahmedabad, India/A.G. High School [H.L. College of Commerce]) earned a 6-3, 6-3 win against Hamza Laleej at No. 5. Przemyslaw Filipek (Bedzin, Poland/Second Lo [Silesia]) beat Alex Fiovarante 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 giving the Blue and White a 3-0 lead, while freshman Ale Estrada Gomez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/PERT) clinched the match with a victory at No. 3, downing Kashyap Ashok, 7-5, 6-4.
Hubbard added, “We have a huge weekend ahead with matches against a tough Buffalo team and Princeton who is ranked 23rd in the nation, so this was a good confidence booster heading into the weekend.”
The Hawks will travel to Princeton , N.J. this weekend to take on the Bulls (6:00 p.m.) and Tigers (3:00 p.m.) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
