MONMOUTH TAKES INAUGURAL hOURglass RIVALRY TROPHY

WEST LONG BRANCH – Monmouth University claimed the first annual hOURglass Rivalry crown, topping fellow Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Garden State foes Rider University and Saint Peter's University, in the initial year of the competition in 2013-14. The Hawks won the trophy, which takes into account, for scoring purposes, all of the sports that the three rivals sponsor which compete in the conference. Monmouth won the trophy by accumulating 35 points, while Rider finished second with 30 and Saint Peter's compiled 27.

“It's very exciting to come out on top in the first year of the hOURglass Rivalry,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Marilyn McNeil. “We really value the competition with our in-state conference rivals and look forward to many great years of this rivalry as we continue to build new traditions.”

The scoring between the sports which compete head-to-head, with the exception of men's and women's basketball, awards one point to the prevailing team. For men's and women's basketball, the winner is awarded two points. For the sports which have a conference championship, such as men's and women's cross country and track and field, the highest-finishing team among the three receives three points, second place gets two points and third place is awarded one point.
