PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Paced by freshmen Faith Garcia (Stamford, Conn./Staples) and Sarah Kokotajlo's (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) top-20 finishes, the Monmouth University women's golf team wrapped up play at the Rutgers Invitational with a share of 13th place, Saturday afternoon at the par-71 Rutgers Golf Course. The Hawks carded a first round 322 on Friday before posting a 329 in the second 18-holes to end the 36-hole event with 651.
Garcia and Kokotajlo both opened in the 70s on Friday, carding 75 and 76, respectively, to help lead the Hawks to a share of ninth overall after the first day. Garcia followed up with 81, while Kokotajlo's second round 82 separated the classmates by two strokes on the leaderboard. Garcia ended the two-day event with a piece of 17th, while Kokotajlo earned sole possession of 20th. Junior Rebecca Gaona (Howell, N.J./Howell) compiled 166 after rounds of 81 and 85. Rookie Kaitlin Clancy (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) recorded 171 after taking nine shots off her first round 90. Junior Jessica Kavanagh (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) erased five shots off her first round score to complete the Hawks' card with 177 (91-86).
LIU Brooklyn came in first in the 17-team field, shooting 608, a shot better than Rutgers, to claim the team crown.
Monmouth concludes its fall slate October 26-27 at the Lehigh Invitational, held at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
