NEPTUNE, N.J. – The Monmouth University women's golf team finished the Hawk Invitational fourth overall after shooting a second-round 351, Sunday afternoon at Jumping Brook Country Club. The Hawks were led by Kelsi Kavanagh's (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) two-day total of 169 as the senior finish the annual event with a share of 12th overall.
LIU Brooklyn led the tournament from wire-to-wire, shooting a total of 661 (328-333), edging out Siena which finished with a 662 after firing a second-round best 330. Harford hurdled MU on the leaderboard, ending the 36-hole event with a 683 (338-351), six strokes ahead of the Blue and White which concluded the tournament with a 689. Fairleigh Dickinson earned fifth compiling a score of 693 (344-349) followed by Quinnipiac in sixth with a 699 (346-353). Wagner (730; 373-357) finished 27 strokes ahead of Holy Cross, which posted a 757 (401-356) and 31 strokes ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn (761; 377-384). Albany, which was playing with only three golfers, rounded out the 10-team field.
Kavanagh notched a 38 on the back-nine to end her day with an 85. The senior, who saved par on 17 of the 36 holes throughout the tournament, recorded her 14th top-20 finish of her career. Senior Rachel Werner (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and junior Michelle Rosenhouse (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West), who both came into the final day with an 83, continued to match each other, both carding rounds of 87 to end the tournament with a two-day total of 170. Elizabeth Abbondandolo (Oyster Bay Cove, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) posted a 92 on the second day, earning a 180 for the tournament, while freshman Rebecca Gaona (Howell, N.J./Howell) inked a 96 for the second day in a row.
Playing as individuals, sophomore Ashley Navin (Ware, Mass./Quabbin Regional) registered a 94 in the second round, a stroke less than her total yesterday, while rookie Jessica Kavanagh (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Boro) carded a 89 in the final round, 12 strokes off her first day result.
LIU's Marisol Doglioli earned medalist honors, firing rounds of 78 and 80 to finish the tournament with a 158.
Monmouth will have a week off before heading up to the Hartford Invitational which will be held at the Rockledge Golf Club in West Hartford, Conn., April 14-16.
