BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior Trish O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort) scored her fourth goal of the season, but the Monmouth University field hockey team ultimately fell to Lehigh, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Ulrich Sports Complex.?? The Hawks outshot Lehigh, 20-13, while holding a 10-3 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.??
Lehigh got on the board 7:03 into the opening frame when Kimberly Eng scored her first goal of the half, taking a feed from Abigail Bakke and made a move to the baseline, beating Monmouth's goalkeeper Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley).
Sophomore Amanda Schoenfeld (West Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) sent a feed to the middle of the circle in the 16th minute where O'Dwyer settled the ball and sent a backhanded shot to the back of the cage for her third goal of the weekend for the equalizer.
Eng struck again in the 24th minute, finishing off a two-on-one, to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead it would never relinquish.
Mathews made nine saves in cage for the Blue and White, while her counterpart, Sophie Fitzpatrick turned away six shots for the Mountain Hawks.
Michelle Pieczynski (Doylestown, Pa./Central Buck West), who had her point streak halted at five games, and O'Dwyer each registered five shots.? Junior Alex Carroll (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) had three of her four shots reach target.
Monmouth returns to action next weekend as it battles Georgetown on neutral ground at the University of Maryland on Saturday, before visiting American on Sunday in Washington, D.C.
