MERION STATION, Pa. - Four different players scored goals as the Monmouth University field hockey team earned its first victory of the season, posting a 5-1 decision over Saint Joseph's, Friday afternoon on Ellen Ryan Field.  Trish O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort) led the squad with two goals, while Nicole Manziano (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township), Alex Carroll (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional) and Chelsea Mann (Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack) each found the back of the cage for the Blue and White.

"Today was a great win and a true team effort," said head coach Carli Figlio following the victory.  "We had great performances from every line and we will look to build off this win on Sunday against Lehigh."

Monmouth, which fired 12 total shots in the first half, struck with under 10 minutes to go in the opening stanza.  Rookie Lauren Horner (Shnecksville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) inserted a penalty corner to graduate Tara Brown (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood), who fired a shot that was turned away by SJU's goalkeeper, Kate Mitchell.  The ball caromed to Manziano who knocked in the rebound for her first career goal, giving the Blue and White a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes before the break, MU increased its advantage as Carroll's blast through a crowd found the back of the cage for her first tally of the year.

The home team cut the lead in half, four minute into the second frame, as Jordan Martin's strike from the right wing beat MU's junior goalkeeper Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) to get Saint Joseph's on the board.

Monmouth responded in the 45th minute as O'Dwyer deflected rookie Orla Macken's (Dublin, Ireland/Rathdown School) shot out of the air for her second goal of the season.  Macken's assist is her first point in a MU uniform.

A minute and three seconds later, O'Dwyer took a pass from sophomore Amanda Schoenfeld (West Sayville, N.Y./Connetquot) and fired a shot that trickled in off of Mitchell's pads for her second of the game, giving the visiting Hawks a commanding 4-1 advantage.

Monmouth added insurance in the 55th minute as Michelle Pieczynski (Doylestown, Pa./Central Buck West) and Chelsea Mann (Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack) were alone in the circle.  The senior sent a pass over to the rookie, who found the back of the cage for her first career goal.  With the assist, Pieczynski, who stands at 109 career points after today's win, has registered a point in five-straight games.

Mathews made four saves in the victory, while Amanda Westerweller (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel), making her collegiate debut, did not see a shot during her time in cage.   Mitchell, who saw 15 of MU's 22 shots, recorded 10 saves in the setback.  Maddie Wagenfeld turned away four shots in over 10 minutes of action for the home team.

MU outshot SJU, 22-12, while the two sides both finished with six corner opportunities.

Monmouth continues its seven-game road swing as it travels to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania this Sunday to battle Lehigh beginning at noon.
