WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Fairleigh
Dickinson won the doubles point and the first three singles matches finished to
defeat the Monmouth University men's tennis team, 4-0, in the NEC Championship
Match Sunday morning at the Mercer County Tennis Center. With the loss, the
Hawks finish their season at 8-12 (5-4 NEC), while the Knights (15-8, 7-0 NEC)
advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The Knights
won, 8-2, at both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take the first point of the match.
Arvis Berzins and Ibrahim Shams defeated Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta,
N.J./Sparta) and Francis Jedlinski (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) at No.
1, while Mark Hemy and Peter Skvarka defeated Jason Rothstein (Pine Brook,
N.J.) and Carl Jedlinski (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) at No. 3. The No.
2 doubles match between David Sherwood (Little Egg Harbor,
N.J./Pinelands)/Laurence Heads (Stockton-on-Tees, England/Repton School) and
Dominic Hemy/Marco Jemersic was halted at 5-5.
The Knights
quickly took a 3-0 advantage as Shams defeated Francis Jedlinski, 6-0, 6-1, at
No. 2 and Dominic Hemy beat Rothstein, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 6. Berzins clinched the
match with a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Marcinkowski at No. 1.
Heads
trailed Yuri Gricheno, 7-6, 3-1, when the No. 3 match was halted, while Carl
Jedlinski took the first set against Mark Hemy, 6-2, before trailing, 4-1, in
the second set when the match was stopped. Sherwood was close to evening his
match against Skvarka after dropping the first set, 6-2. Sherwood led the
second set, 5-2, when the match was stopped.
