WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - David Sherwood
(Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) won at No. 4 singles, but the Monmouth
University men's tennis team was defeated by league-leading Fairleigh
Dickinson, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-10 (1-3
NEC), while the Knights improve to 12-7 (4-0 NEC).
The doubles
duo of Francis Jedlinski (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) and Laurence Heads
(Stockton-on-Tees, England/Repton School) won at No. 2 doubles, defeating Dominic
Hemy and Marco Jemersic, 8-5, but the Knights took close victories at Nos. 1
and 3 to take the doubles point. Arvis Berzins and Ibrahim Shams defeated
Freddy Marcinkowski (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and Carl Jedlinski (Manalapan,
N.J./Freehold Township), 8-5, at No. 1, while Sherwood and Tom Kowalski
(Westfield, N.J./Westfield) fell to Mark Hemy and Peter Skvarka, 9-7, at No. 3.
Sherwood
then defeated Mark Hemy, 7-5, 7-6 (6), at No. 4 singles, but the Knights took
the remaining five singles flights to clinch the 6-1 victory. Marcinkowski fell
to Berzins, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1, while Francis Jedlinski was defeated by Shams,
7-5, 6-0, at No. 2.
Carl
Jedlinski was defeated by Yuri Gricheno, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3, while Jason
Rothstein (Pine Brook, N.J.) fell to Skvarka, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5. Dom Hemy
rounded out the scoring for the Knights with a 6-1, 7-6, victory over Stephen
Suboleski (Sicklerville, N.J.) at No. 6.
The Hawks return to action Friday, when they
play host to Hofstra. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
