ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - Senior David
Sherwood (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) earned a double win and freshman
Francis Jedlinski (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) gutted out a three-set
victory at No. 2 singles to clinch a 4-3 victory over Colgate, Tuesday morning
at Sanlando Park. With Monmouth's second-straight win, the Hawks improve to 2-4
on the season, while the Raiders fall to 5-6.
Sherwood
paired with Tom Kowalski (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) to defeat Harry Jewett and
Connor Feuille, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles, before easily taking down Alec
Goldstein, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Sherwood held serve throughout the
dominant victory.
Sophomore Jason
Rothstein (Pine Brook, N.J.) and freshman Carl Jedlinski (Manalapan,
N.J./Freehold Township) also picked up relatively easy singles victories.
Rothstein defeated John Beam, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6, while Jedlinski got past Sean
Spellberg at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3.
Francis
Jedlinski then jumped on Bobby Berkowitz at No. 2, winning the first set, 6-1,
before being pushed to the brink in both the second and third sets. Berkowitz
won the second set, 7-6 (8), before the third set also went to a tiebreaker.
Jedlinski got out to a 5-0 lead in the tiebreaker, before taking an 8-2
decision and the match.
The Hawks conclude Spring Break action in
Florida on Wednesday, when they travel to Boca Raton to take on Lynn
University. First serve between Monmouth and the 9-1 Fighting Knights, who
recently defeated a formidable Georgetown squad handily, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
