BROOKLYN, N.Y.
- St. Francis (N.Y.)'s Gabriel Bagot scored the game-winning goal in the 84th
minute as the Terriers defeated the Monmouth University men's soccer team, 2-1,
Friday night at the Aviator Sports & Recreation Center. With the loss, the
Hawks fall to 9-4-3 (4-2-2 NEC), while the Terriers improve to 7-8-1 (4-4-0
NEC).
The Terriers struck first in
the 31st minute when Adam Maabdi scored his seventh goal of the
season off a Kevin Correa feed. Monmouth wasted little time finding the
equalizer, when Ryan Clark (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) dished out his
team-leading sixth assist of the season on a cross to set up Andres Penfold
(Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) for his second tally of the year in the 35th
minute.
In the 67th
minute, the Terriers were awarded a penalty kick, but for the second time this
season, senior goalkeeper Alex Blackburn (Natick, Mass./Natick) was equal to the
task, making the save to keep the score knotted at 1-1.
But in the 84th
minute, after a series of earlier saves by Blackburn, Bagot beat the Hawks'
goalkeeper for the game-winner. Viktor Bakkioui was credited with the assist.
Blackburn made a career-high nine
saves in defeat, while his counterpart, Tyler Clarhaut, made five stops to earn
the win. For the game, the Terriers took an 18-10 advantage in shots, while each
team attempted five corner kicks.
The Hawks return to NEC
action on the road in Brooklyn Sunday, when they travel to LIU Brooklyn. Kickoff
from LIU Field is scheduled for noon.
