FIELD HOCKEY TRIPPED UP BY WILLIAM AND MARY, 3-1

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University field hockey team fell to William and Mary, 3-1, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at So Sweet A Cat Field. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Tribe improves to 2-0 on the year.

William and Mary struck 46 seconds into contest when Emma Clifton blasted a shot from the right side high into the far corner, past MU goalkeeper Teresa Mathews (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) for an early 1-0 lead.

With just under three minutes remaining in the first half, the Blue and White tried to even the score as senior Elly Rosati (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) dribbled down the right side and sent a feed into the circle where junior Michelle Pieczynski (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) pushed the ball just wide of the cage, keeping the score 1-0 heading into halftime.

The Tribe added to their lead 16 minutes into the second half as Christine Johnson connected off a penalty corner to give William and Mary a two goal advantage. Jesse Ebner tipped in a rebound 15 minutes later putting the Hawks down three goals.

Monmouth got on the board with 6:30 remaining in regulation as sophomore Patricia O'Dwyer (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto Beaufort) collected a loose ball in the circle and fired a shot past backup goaltender, Elizabeth Frey, for her career goal, which cut the lead to 3-1.

Mathews made five saves in a losing effort while Tribe's starter Camilla Hill earned the victory in cage, also registering five saves.

MU held the advantage in shots, 16-13, and penalty corners, 11-5.

The Blue and White return to action this Friday, September 9th, as it hosts Lehigh at 4:00 p.m. at So Sweet A Cat Field.
