WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Monmouth University women's
lacrosse team (3-5) won its third straight contest on Sunday afternoon after
defeating Binghamton (0-4) 12-10 at Kessler Field.
Monmouth, which found itself down 5-4 at halftime, tallied
eight second half goals while fighting back a Bearcat comeback attempt to
solidify the win. Senior captain Megan Brennan (King of Prussia, Pa. /Archbishop Carroll) tallied a season-high five
goals in the game.
"I think it took everybody for us to win today," said head coach Denise Wescott. "Kirby had a great day in goal
and Megan [Brennan] and a number of the seniors stepped it up. Megan's quick
stick goals were beautiful. Our experience really came out today, our upper classmen
know where each other are on the field.
They [Binghamton] were very aggressive today, we had to fight and work
hard for the win."
The Hawks got on the board first when senior Perry DeWitt
(Malvern, Pa. /Great Valley) took a feed from junior Rachel Feirstein (St.
James, N.Y. /Smithtown East) and scored with 26:29 left in the first half. The
two squads then alternated goals, leaving MU with a 2-1 lead, until Binghamton
reeled off four unanswered tallies to take a three-goal lead with 12:48
showing.
MU closed the half by scoring two straight goals, the first
from Brennan and the second from freshman Kirstyn Urbas (Sewall, N.J.
/Washington Township), to cut the Bearcats' lead to 5-4 at the half.
After MU knotted the contest at 7-7, the senior duo of Shawn Evans (Moorestown, N.J. /Moorestown) and Brennan hooked up to put the Hawks up
one, with the latter supplying the goal, with 17:37 left in the game. The momentum shifted back to Binghamton as
the Bearcats scored a pair of goals in a 37 second span to retake the
lead. Three consecutive goals from Hawk
seniors, two from Brennan and one from Ali Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y./Shaker),
put Monmouth ahead 11-9. Binghamton
scored with 5:05 to play to close to within one but junior Carissa Franzi (Fairfield,
N.J./West Essex) put the game out of reach with her free position goal at the
Brennan led all scorers with five goals, also scooping up
two ground balls and four draw controls on the day. Evans finished with a goal and two assists
for three points while Pollock's two goals and assist netted the senior with
three points. Freshmen Gianna D'Urso (Fairfield,
N.J./West Essex) had two caused turnovers off the bench while fellow rookie
Kirstyn Urbas (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) finished with a goal and an
assist.
MU got another solid effort out of junior Kirby Mundorf
(Catonsville, Md./Seton Keogh), who had 14 saves in the game. The Bearcats pressured the MU defense to the
tune of 39 shots, compared to 25 for the Hawks. MU was 3-4 on free position attempts while
Binghamton was 2-9.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday when it hosts Robert
Morris at 3:00 pm at Kessler Field.
