EASTON, PA. - The Monmouth University women's soccer team posted its fourth straight shutout victory on Friday night, as the Hawks blanked Lafayette 1-0, behind junior
Kim Malecki's game-winner.
With the win, Monmouth improves to 4-2 overall on the season, and has recorded four straight triumphs over its Patriot League foe. Lafayette falls to 2-5 on the year.
"We played some very good soccer tonight," stated head coach
Krissy Turner, who coached Lafayette for three seasons to start her career. "Our well-balanced attack proved a success tonight, as Gianna and Kim connected on a great goal."
The junior duo of Malecki and defender
Gianna Russo combined for the game-winning tally at 39:53, as both registered their first points of the season. Russo, who notched just her second career assist, drove down the right sideline and into the six-yard box, to find Malecki, who beat the LC netminder with a one-touch shot with her right foot.
The goal was Malecki's second career score, both of which have come against Lafayette, and her first career game-winning goal.
Also in victory, goalkeeper
Lia Fierro recorded her fourth shutout of the year, and 19th of her career, as the junior made three saves in net for the Hawks. Fierro's counterpart, Lauren Smedley, made three saves for the Leopards.
In the match, Monmouth held a 10-5 advantage in shots, and a 6-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, when the Hawks open a five-match home stand, with a non-conference game with Lehigh on The Great Lawn at 1:00 p.m.
