NEW BRITAIN, CONN. - First-team All-NEC performers
Mary Wilks and
Courtney Snyder combined for the lone score of the game, as the second-seeded Monmouth University women's soccer team posted a 1-0 Northeast Conference Semifinal victory over No. 3 seed Quinnipiac, on Friday afternoon.
With 9:01 left on the clock in the opening half, Snyder played a through ball over the back's head from the top of the box, and Wilks ran on, and placed a volley over the goalkeeper's head from eight yards out.
"It was a great win," stated head coach
Krissy Turner, who has led the Hawks to their fourth straight NEC Tournament appearance. "We battled through some rough stretches of the game and got the goal we needed."
Turner, who has guided Monmouth to five championship game appearances, added, "Our goal all season was to get to the finals and we accomplished that. Now we have the next step."
The Hawks, who last advanced to the NEC Championship game in 2007, outshot the Bobcats 18-7 in the match, including a 12-4 advantage in the first half. Monmouth also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
All-NEC first-team goalkeeper
Lia Fierro recorded her 13th shutout of the season, giving the junior 28 in her career, while making one save. Fierro's counterpart, Elizabeth Cook, made three saves for the Bobcats.
Monmouth, which suffered its lone NEC setback of the regular season to CCSU (1-0), returns to action on Sunday, at the top-seeded Blue Devils, who were 1-0 winners over No. 4 seed Long Island, on Friday.
