BURLINGTON, VT. - The Monmouth University field hockey team fell to Vermont, the host school in the final game of the Sheraton Catamount Classic, 2-1 in overtime at the Moulton Winder Field. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 0-6 on the season while Vermont improves to 3-2 and were named tournament champions.
“Against Vermont, I thought we really turned the corner and played well,” said head coach Carli Figlio. “I am proud of the team after this loss and they continue to take a step in the right direction. We will be ready for our game on Wednesday.”
Vermont jumped ahead early as Lauren Burke was able to put home a rebound for her third goal of the season. Monmouth was able to recover before halftime as Sarah Keppel (Northhampton, Pa./Northampton) deflected a long pass from Nora Bosmans (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) past the Catamount keeper for her third goal of the year. Bosmans recorded her first points of the season with the assist.
After playing to a scoreless second half, Vermont was able to put past the winner just 4:32 into overtime. After working the ball around the circle after a penalty corner, Jen Angers found Mackenzie Williams on the far post who slid the ball past Melissa Katz (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) for the winner.
Katz, who faced six shots, made four saves on the day. She along with Keppel was named to the All-Tournament Team following today's contests.
Monmouth returns to action Wednesday, September 24th as they travel to Easton, Pa. for a 7 p.m. clash with the Leopards of Lafayette College.
