NEW BRITAIN, CONN. - Trailing 3-0 in the second half, Monmouth senior Joanna DeMoor netted two scores, to pull the Hawks within a lone goal, but eventually fell 3-2 at Central Connecticut State, in Northeast Conference women's soccer action. Monmouth, which was on a nine-game unbeaten streak, falls to 10-2-1 on the season, and 3-1 in league play. The Blue Devils improve to 3-1 in league play and 6-4-4 overall.
"We played well today, but did not capitalize on early opportunities, and they did," commented head coach Krissy Turner. "We look forward to returnimg to The Great Lawn on Friday."
The Blue Devils got on the board first on Rachel Caneen's fourth goal in the last two games, as she beat Monmouth keeper Lia Fierro from just inside the box to the top right of the goal to give CCSU the early edge at 17:39.
The lead reached 2-0 when Karise Hilt scored at 24:30 in the first half. Hilt took a give-and-go from Leah Blayney and beat Fierro to the lower left corner for the two goal advantage.
In the second half the Blue Devils upped their lead to 3-0 on a goal from Brittany Jackson, with the clock at 50:50.
The Hawks scored their first goal of the game to cut the Blue Devil lead to 3-1 at 64:53 in the second half. DeMoor's eighth goal of the season off a pass from junior Andrea Lopez cut the Blue Devil lead to two. DeMoor scored again to cut the lead to 3-2 with 1:02 left in the game, as junior BrieAnne Nomejko was credited with an assist on the tally.
Blue Devil goalkeeper Caitey Casey made seven saves in goal, while Fierro made four stops in net for the Hawks, who were outshot 13-11.
DeMoor now leads the team with a career-best nine goals, and 20 points, while Lopez notched her team-high fifth assist on the year.
Monmouth returns to action on Friday, when the Hawks host Saint Francis at 3 p.m., on The Great Lawn, where the Blue and White are 6-0 so far this season.
