MU FIELD HOCKEY MOUNTS SECOND HALF COMEBACK, BUT FALLS SHORT TO SACRED HEART IN OVERTIME, 4-3

FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? Monmouth University field hockey made a dramatic second half come back before losing to host Sacred Heart, 4-3 in overtime Sunday afternoon in Fairfield, Conn. The Hawks pounded in three goals ? all within four minutes ? to force overtime action, but could not prevail as they fall to 0-2 on the young NEC season.

Sacred Heart posted a 3-0 lead going into the half when the Pioneers' Carisa Eye notched a hat trick in the first 35 minutes of play. The Hawks were outshot 7-2 in the period giving up two rebound goals and a one-time flick shot to Eye.

With their backs against the walls, the Hawks responded in the second half with three goals of their own. Junior Sarah Keppel (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) pounded in a rebound goal from senior Enza Mazza (Oceanport, N.J./Shore Regional). The Hawks continued their aggressive play when Nora Bosmans (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) flicked in a penalty shot to put the Blue and White down by only one with ten minutes to play.

The Hawks were able to complete the comeback, and force overtime, when Mazza slapped in a shot over sprawled out Pioneers goalie Whitney Mills just two minutes after Bosman's penalty shot goal. Mazza posted a career-high three points in the game.

The Pioneers' Eye knocked in the game winning goal three minutes in overtime on a one-on-one backhander past Hawks goalie Melissa Katz (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional). Katz posted four saves on the day for the Hawks.

The Hawks fall to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in NEC action while losing all four overtime matches this season. Despite the loss, the Blue and White posted a season-high 16 shots on net, while also owning the corner opportunities 9-3

Monmouth returns to NEC action this Friday, October 17th when the Hawks host Robert Morris at 4:00 p.m. at So Sweet A Cat Field on Monmouth campus.
