HAMDEN, CONN. ? Monmouth University junior Andrea Lopez knocked in the rebound off freshman Jennie Vartebedian's service, at the 88-minute mark, to spark the Hawks to a 2-1 victory at Quinnipiac, in Northeast Conference women's soccer action. Monmouth, which is unbeaten in its last nine matches, improves to 10-1-1 overall, and 3-0 in the league.
With two minutes remaining, in a 1-1 tie, Vartebedian had a shot blocked by a Quinnipiac defender, before Lopez laced the rebound into the lower left corner for the game-winning score, her second game-winner of the year.
“We had a strong performance on the road today,” said head coach Krissy Turner. “We did what we needed to do and I am proud of our effort. As a team, we needed to stop one of the top scorers [Furtuna Velaj - 12 goals in eight games] in the league today and we did.”
After a scoreless first half, Monmouth took a 1-0 advantage at 50:25 on an own goal, when a Bobcat defender knocked the ball into the net on a crossing pass.
Quinnipiac knotted the match in the 71st minute when Meagan McLoughlin netted her first score of the season. Chelsea Smith started the play with a cross from the right side, to the far post, which was headed in by McLoughlin.
Monmouth outshot Quinnipiac, 16-13 in the contest, forcing Bobcat goalkeeper, Jillian Kelley to make two saves. Sophomore Lia Fierro made six saves in goal for the Hawks, while improving her mark to 9-1-1 on the year. The Hawks also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Monmouth is now 16-3-2 in its last 21 Northeast Conference matches.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, October 12th, when the Hawks travel to Central Connecticut State for a Northeast Conference match, in New Britain.
