WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -
The Monmouth University women's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw with Seton Hall on Friday afternoon. The tie improves the Hawks' record to 1-2-1 on the season, while the Pirates are now 3-1-1.
Monmouth held a 9-7 advantage in shots in the match, as freshman Lia Fierro (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) and Pirate netminder Amanda Becker were equally up to the task in the game. Fierro, making her third career start, stopped five Seton Hall shots, while Becker improved to 3-1-1 with four saves.
"A lot of credit has to go to our goalkeeper and back-four to earn this shutout," said head coach Krissy Turner, who has guided the Hawks to a 9-0-1 record in their last 10 matches on The Great Lawn.
Fierro made saves on a breakaway with 11:40 left in the second half, stopped Madelene Kill's attempt in the box with 8:20 remaining. With four minutes left in the first overtime period, SHU's Katie Andreski hit the crossbar and Fierro made a diving save off the rebound, to maintain the scoreless tie.
Becker was bailed out by teammate Beth Troutman with two minutes remaining in the second overtime, as Troutman cleared an Illiana Blackshear (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) shot.
Blackshear and sophomore Andrea Lopez (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) each had two shots for Monmouth, while the Hawks generated eight corner kicks. Andreski recorded three shots for the Pirates, while Kill added two more attempts.
Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, when the Hawks host Lehigh in a non-conference match on The Great Lawn at 1 p.m.
