STONY BROOK, N.Y.- Monmouth University's women's lacrosse team suffered its second loss of the week and third of the season on Sunday after falling to Stony Brook, 12-6.
The Hawks, now 5-3 on the season, pulled out to a 1-0 lead with a
Katie Degen (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) unassisted goal in the first three and a half minutes. Stony Brook answered with a pair of goals but Degen fed fellow senior
Carolyn Raveia (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) with 19:14 left to tie the game at 2-2. The Seawolves responded with four unanswered goals, including two from Kaitlin Leggio to take a 6-4 lead. Junior
Megan Nutter (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored twice with less than three minutes remaining, both times beating SBU goaltender Jen Sandtorv on 8 meter shots.
The Blue & White trailed 6-4 coming out of the break and Stony Brook's offense made sure that the home team would retain the lead for the rest of the way by scoring four straight goals in the first 15 minutes. Degen and
Colleen Burg (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) scored goals at the 9:03 and 5:33 marks, respectively, but MU eventually fell 12-6.
Jenna Celano's five goals led all scorers with Leggio finishing with three goals of her own.
Degen led the Hawks with three points on two goals and an assist. Raveia and Nutter each had two points in the game, with
Kaitlyn Robinson (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's) picking up four ground balls from her defender position.
Monmouth was outshot 33-28 in the contest, with
Monica Johnson (Radnor, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) making 14 saves in net while grabbing five ground balls. Sandtorv finished with 15 saves for the Seawolves, who improve to 5-1 on the season.
The game was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday but had to be moved due to adverse weather conditions. The Hawks will look to snap their two game slide on Friday, March 23, when they play at Wagner starting at 3:30 p.m.
