WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -
The Monmouth University women's soccer team, which has won four straight matches, improved to 6-2-3 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast Conference with its 2-0 victory over Wagner on Sunday afternoon. Monmouth registered two second half goals en route to the league victory.
"To get our second conference win is moving us closer to our goal of making the NEC Tournament," said Monmouth head coach Krissy Turner. "We have still have seven games left and have to take them one game at a time."
After a scoreless first half, in which Monmouth outshot Wagner 8-0, the Hawks opened the scoring at 49:15 off a corner kick opportunity. Senior Amy Hoyer (Chesterfield, N.J./North Burlington) played the ball into the box, which sophomore Shannon Rogers (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) put on goal. A Wagner defender stopped the progress of the shot, which returned to Rogers' foot. Rogers redirected the shot back on frame for her third score in the last three games.
Monmouth went ahead 2-0 at 76:08, when Wagner's Stephanie Burnett, the last defender, was carded in the box for pulling down Mary Wilks (Bridgeton, N.J./Bridgeton), who was charging on an Andrea Lopez (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) cross. The ensuing penalty kick was buried into the right netting by sophomore Alessandra DeTata (Brick, N.J./Brick) for her first goal of the season.
Freshman Lia Fierro (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) registered her fourth shutout of the year in goal for the Hawks, while Wagner's Samantha Schueschner made seven saves and was helped by two defensive stops by her defensive teammates.
Monmouth, which had a Brittani Heller (Newton, N.J./Newton) goal called back due to an offsides, a Lopez shot hit the crossbar and a Wilks' header bounce off the post, led in overall shots 23-0, including a 15-0 edge in the second half. The Hawks also held a 13-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Monmouth moves to 2-0 in the Northeast Conference after defeating the Seahawks, who fall to 3-7-1 (1-1 NEC) with the loss. The Hawks are now 13-0-1 all-time against Wagner, are now 13-0-2 in their last 15 home matches on The Great Lawn.
The Blue and White return to action on Friday, October 12, when the Hawks travel to Fairleigh Dickinson for a 2:30 p.m., NEC contest.
