Amy Hoyer (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington) drilled a one-timer off a cross from freshman
Kim Malecki (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) at 79:55, to lead the Hawks to a 1-0 win over Quinnipiac in Northeast Conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The victory improves the Hawks' record to 8-2-4 overall and 4-0-1 in the NEC. The win extends Monmouth's unbeaten streak to 11 games.
Malecki smothered a Quinnipiac defensive clearance and carried the ball to the right-flank endline, setting up the cross. Hoyer, from 12 yards out struck the ball into the near-side netting for the game-winner, her fourth of the season.
"A terrific team performance," stated head coach Krissy Turner. "To get a shutout against the team that has scored the most goals in the league is a tribute to our commitment to defense. Getting three points today is a good step towards reaching our goals of reaching the NEC Tournament."
Monmouth outshot Quinnipiac 13-3 in the match and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Freshman Lia Fierro (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) made one save in goal for the Hawks, earning her fifth shutout on the year. Fierro's save came at 57:09, robbing Amber Sidoti off a break-away with a kick save.
Hoyer, who led the Hawks with six shots, knicked the cross bar with 11 minutes left in the opening half, after a give-and-go between BrieAnne Nomejko (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert), Hoyer and Joanna DeMoor (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley). Sophomore Andrea Lopez (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) collected four shots.
Chloe Beizer made four saves in goal for the Bobcats, who had two quality scoring chances in the second half. Sidoti, off another break-away cracked a shot that went just over the cross bar at 65:43 for the other opportunity. Sidoti had all three shots for QU.
The Blue and White, which is now 5-0-2 at home, returns to action on Friday, October 26, when the Hawks travel to Robert Morris University for an NEC match in Moon Township, Pa.
