WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.- Despite losing the doubles point, the Monmouth men's tennis team took five out of six singles matches to defeat Rider and move to 2-0 on the season.
At the No. 1 doubles position, the MU duo of
Tom Corrie and
Pedro Bruno lost a close 8-6 match to Rider's Ashed and Haight. Senior
Ben Evenden (Cresco, Pa./Ridgewood) and freshman Corey Forrest evened the score with a 8-0 blanking of the Broncs' Wojciechowski and Straub. In the deciding doubles match, Rider's Leone and Becker edged out the Hawks'
Tim McLane> (Green Cove Springs, Fla./Seven Bridges Prep) and
Chris Hart (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose) by a score of 8-6.
Down by a team score of 1-0, the Hawks rallied to take five out the six singles matches, with Evenden starting off at the No. 1 position with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ashed. Corrie was challenged against Haight but came away with a 7-5, 6-4 victory. McLane had little trouble against Wojciechowski, whom he dispatched with a 6-0, 6-1 final tally.
Bruno's 6-0, 6-0 win over Worlow clinched the win for the Hawks with Forrest adding the insurance team point with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Straub.
Miles Vidreiro (Helmetta, N.J./Spotswood) lost his first match of the season by a final score of 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 flight.
The Hawks, now 2-0 in the fall season, will play in the Queens College Tournament next on Sept. 23 and 24.
