Cait Wetmore, Head Coach of the Monmouth University Women’s Basketball Team, announced the addition of Aja Boyd as an assistant coach on May 14, 2024. Boyd came to West Long Branch from UNC Charlotte, where she served as the Director of Player Development.
In his first season at Monmouth, Boyd was part of a staff that helped the Hawks to 16 wins and 10 at home, finishing fifth in the CAA. Boyd, working with the post players, helped Taisha Exanor to All-CAA Second Team honors, with Exanor ranking second in the CAA in rebounding and in the top-10 in field goal percentage. Additionally, Belle Kranbuhl ranked third in the conference in blocks, finishing her career with the second most blocks in school history thanks to 60 rejections in her final season. Boyd was a factor in a breakout season for Divine Dibula, who played in all 31 games and ranked third on the team in scoring and fourth in rebounding while shooting 57.4% from the field. Junior Ella Farrelly was also a major piece for MU in 2024-25, placing second on the Hawks with seven rebounds per contest and shooting 52.3% from the floor.
Boyd was promoted from graduate assistant to Director of Player Development in June 2023 and helped lead the 49ers to 28 wins across two seasons. Alongside Wetmore, Boyd played a key role in game planning and preparation, as well as assisting with recruiting, community outreach, and team branding during the program’s transition from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference last year. UNC Charlotte won nine conference games in its first season in the AAC and added a 69-58 victory at high-major Wake Forest on December 7.
Boyd played under Wetmore at UNC Greensboro where she was a team captain selected to the SoCon Second Team and named the conference’s Ann Lashley Inspiration Award recipient in 2022. Under Wetmore’s guidance, Boyd finished second on the team in scoring (9.6 points per game) and rebounding (6.6 per game), where she shined as the conference’s third-best offensive rebounder at 2.9 per contest. She began her career at LIU Brooklyn, where she was named to the All-NEC Rookie Team in 2016-17.
A Petersburg, Va. native, Boyd earned her bachelor’s degree in English in 2020 and finished a master’s degree in Applied Arts and Sciences at UNC Greensboro in 2022.
