MONMOUTH NAMES ASSISTANT SOFTBALL COACH

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. ? Brick, N.J., resident and former University of Virginia, Georgian Court College and Ocean County College head softball coach Terry DeTuro has been named to fill the assistant softball coaching position at Monmouth University, head coach Carol Sullivan announced on Wednesday.

DeTuro adds 12 years? collegiate coaching experience to the staff, including 11 years as a head coach.

DeTuro arrives at Monmouth following a two-year stint as a regional sales coordinator for Musco Sports Lighting and an assistant director for Little League Baseball District 18.

The Rider College graduate?s last year of coaching came in 1998 when she served as head coach at Ocean County College.

From 1995 to 1997, DeTuro served as head softball coach and director of athletics at Georgian Court College in Lakewood, N.J. During her three-year stint at GCC, she guided the Lions to a 63-28 record. In 1997, she earned NAIA East Region Coach of the Year honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

DeTuro?s first head coaching stint came at Virginia. During her seven-year tenure with the Cavaliers from 1986 to 1992, the squad amassed a 185-102-1 record. She first joined the Virginia coaching staff as an assistant coach in 1984.

DeTuro began her coaching career as a women?s field hockey coach at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in 1983. From 1984 to 1986 she served as a women?s field hockey and women?s basketball coach at Tandem High School in Charlottesville, Va.

A Monmouth County native, DeTuro received her bachelor?s degree in psychology from Rider College in 1983. She was a two-sport standout for the Broncs, earning four letters in softball and two letters in field hockey. She later received her master?s degree in sports psychology.

DeTuro possesses a vast array of experience. In the past, she has served as an NCAA Regional Chair and NAIA Regional Chair for the National Softball Coaches Association as well as being a member of the NSCA?s Legislative & Ethics Committee. She also served as Director of Youth Sports at the Charlottesville YMCA from 1986 to 1992. DeTuro has worked at numerous softball clinics including the NCAA Youth Education Through Sports, Elite Fastpitch Inc., New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association and Virginia High School Coaches Association clinics.
